Last year Japan has a record number of asylum seekers admitted for the country. It comes to eleven people. There were six the year before. Five thousand people asked asylum in the economically prosperous Japan. Only 0.2 percent was assigned. Worldwide that percentage has an average of 32 percent.
Japan has a very strict policy on asylum, against the will of lawyers and activists. They find that Japan is doing too little to protect refugees and calls the low number of recommended recommended shameful. The Japanese Ministry of Justice thinks that many refugees are not coming for political reasons, but thinks they want to come to Japan for economical reasons.
