Happy Valentine’s Day!

Amsterdam Today wishes for everybody a very happy Valentine’s Day with a lot of love! The tradition of Valentine’s Day in the Netherlands where Valentine’s Day celebrations are dating back to the mid-20th century.
February 14th is not only regarded as a romantic event, to be celebrated by lovers, but is also observed as a day of friendship and companionship.

As of 1949, the Dutch export of flowers was growing steadily. During this time the first Dutch Valentine’s campaign took place and the National Organization for Florists proposed the observation of Valentine’s Day or Flower Day in the country. To promote the event among the masses, award ceremonies were organized by the association and a bouquet of Valentine’s Day flowers was given to anyone who had done something exceptional for the society and this gesture brought a new dimension to the Valentine’s Day celebration.

Nowadays, Valentine cards are a very popular way of showing your partner or friend how much you love them as well as sending flowers. The Dutch Postal Service PostNL has a very unique promotion. Anyone mailing a Valentine card on February 13th, can replace the required postage with a kiss and the card will be delivered for free! A ‘kiss-stamp’!

About Frank Scheers

My hometown Amsterdam is a wonderful starting point for journalism. Amsterdam stands for freedom of speech and tolerance. As a journalist, I can express freely and without restrictions on what is happening in Amsterdam, but also in the rest of the world. I write my own content as much as possible, but also scan the rest of the globe for striking news. This news doesn't always have to be breaking news. This can be very interesting news that is as important as breaking news, but slightly less known and just as important to the way people form their opinions. In addition to news from Amsterdam and the world news I also write about articles on politics, fashion, luxury, health, environment, entertainment, life style, business, education, shopping, wining and dining, travel and so on. Amsterdam Today is an active online news magazine and we bring articles in Dutch and in English. Important to mention is that Amsterdam Today deals with Immersive Journalism. That means that we bring fascinating news in combination with virtual reality techniques. You will experience the news as if you were there. Contact: Website | More Posts
